Graupner Cap San Diego Premium Line
The White Swan of the South Atlantic
Original ship story
As “white swans of the South Atlantic”, the Can San class ships became famous in the 1960s. The six general cargo freighters of the shipping company Hamburg Süd operated between Europe and South America and ushered in the era of fast cargo ships. Of the huge holds, more than half were designed as refrigerators. The shapely, slender hulls with the strongly failing stem are more reminiscent of elegant luxury yachts or cruise liners. In fact, the Cap San Diego and its sister ships were also used by passengers for the Atlantic Passage.
With the increasing use of containers, the importance of general cargo freighters declined significantly from the 1980s. The Cap San Diego was sold and ran under several names and different flags until it was scrapped in 1986. The Hanseatic city of Hamburg rescued the freighter and brought it back to Hamburg. After extensive restoration and conversion measures, the Cap San Diego is today the largest, roadworthy museum cargo ship in the world. The Cap San Diego belongs to Hamburg today, like the Michel or the Landungsbrücken. The landmark can be visited daily. On special occasions, the Cap San Diego makes trips that you can book on.
The model
The Graupner Premium Line model of the Cap San Diego was rebuilt according to original plans of the Cap San Diego operating company mbH in the scale 1: 100. Like all Graupner Premium Line models, the Cap San Diego impresses with its high level of detail, the excellent materials and the high-quality, built-in electric motor and rudder servo.
The San Diego is made of a lightweight but very strong GRP hull. The bodies are made of lasered ABS parts. Details and small parts are made of metal. The model is spray-painted with semi-gloss paint, the decorations already installed. The colors and materials used make the model incredibly realistic.
